Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) is one of the most important tools available to the Radiation Oncologists at Ocean Radiation Oncology because it ensures unmatched precision in radiation delivery on a daily basis. A patient’s tumor and surrounding normal structures can change their position from day-to-day because of response to cancer therapy and variable organ filling. To account for these position changes, IGRT takes a rapid real-time CT scan of the patient in the treatment position just before each actual radiation treatment. After the CT images are analyzed, millimeter-level shifts are made in the patient’s positioning within the treatment machine to ensure that the radiation treatment is delivered precisely for the patient’s specific anatomy on that particular day.
